As part of a nationwide effort to preserve and enhance the world’s longest trail network, the Peterborough-Hastings Trans Canada Trail Association is excited to announce it has received $8750 in funding from Trans Canada Trail to support resurfacing of almost 2 km of trail, volunteer development and spring cleanup, over the past year.
In Peterborough County, the maintenance stream grant was used for resurfacing and levelling of nearly 2 km of the Lang Hastings Trail, part of the Trans Canada Trail. After a delay due to an unusually wet August and several very busy beavers, the work was completed in early October.
The Lang Hastings Trail is now a little over 10 years old, with some sections requiring heavy maintenance and new screenings to ensure it remains safe for users. As a volunteer organization, without support from grants and donors, it would be difficult to maintain the annual upkeep or complete major infrastructure projects.
“Trail Care Day embodies the spirit of grassroots stewardship. Communities can shape their local trail experience while contributing to the collective preservation of Canada’s iconic trail network,” says Mathieu Roy, CEO at Trans Canada Trail. “There’s something extremely special about a national effort to care for the Trail that connects us all.”
The Lang Hastings Trail is proud to be part of this national effort to steward the Trans Canada Trail and invites community members to join in the effort.
The Trail Care program is a granting initiative supported by Trans Canada Trail, the organization that stewards and maintains Canada’s 28,000 km trail network. Trail groups and operators from across Canada can apply for grants of up to $1,500 to use toward numerous activities, including accessibility improvements, clean-up, debris removal, art installation, maintenance or volunteer appreciation.
Trail Care is generously supported by Columbia Sportswear and Toyota Canada.
